Jinaraya Khan, age 33 of Baldwin, entered her plea on Monday, Dec. 18, for the crash, which occurred in May 2022, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.

Khan was driving northbound on Grand Avenue with a blood alcohol content of 0.25 percent — more than three times the legal limit — on the morning of May 3, 2022, the DA’s Office said.
At approximately 5:15 a.m. that morning, 66-year-old Scott Freeman, also a Baldwin resident, was attempting to take a left turn onto Grand Avenue, near East Carl Avenue, when Khan’s car rammed into his.
Freeman, who worked at a local printing company and was planning to retire in the next year, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the indictment, Khan was driving 96 miles per hour at the time of the collision, which is three times the 35-mile-per-hour speed limit on Grand Avenue.
Khan has claimed that she was late for work at John F. Kennedy International Airport and had two mimosas before driving.
She was arrested at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries she suffered in the crash.
“Scott Freeman was a longtime Baldwin resident who was looking forward to his retirement,” said DA Anne T. Donnelly.
“Tragically, Freeman never got to enjoy his golden years because this defendant drove her SUV into the victim’s car at 96 miles an hour while she was exceedingly intoxicated…Our condolences are with Scott’s sister and many friends who continue to mourn his loss.”
Khan was charged with the following:
- Aggravated vehicular homicide;
- Assault, second-degree; and
- Aggravated driving while intoxicated.
Her sentencing will be held on March 27, 2024; though the DA recommended a sentence of seven to 21 years in prison, Khan is expected to receive six to 18 years.
